The first World Congress on Electroporation and Pulsed Electric Fields in Biology, Medicine and Food & Environmental Technologies was held in Portoroz, Slovenia from September 6th to 10th 2015. Elea was not only a gold sponsor of the event, but was also represented by Claudia Siemer (R & D Manager) and Stefan Töpfl (Technical Director) as invited speaker at the conference.

The principle of electroporation that is used in ELEA’s Pulsed Electric Fields Systems to perforate cell membranes for low temperature preservation, enhanced mass transfer and structure modification in food and liquids, is also applied in many different fields. In biology, it can be used to open cells in order to insert DNA or enzymes. In medicine it is applied in tumor therapy.

For the first time, all relevant scientists and researchers from all different disciplines, who are involved in basic research or are developing applications based on electroporation and the use of pulsed electric fields, came together to discuss the latest achievements, developments and future applications of the technology.

All in all, more than 350 participants took part in the first congress. The second World Congress on Electroporation will be held in 2017 in Norfolk, USA.
